Fight climate change

This is at the core of sustainable development, its what challenges us to fulfil the Paris Pledge for Action. In 2019 we set out targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-effect emissions (GEE), according to the Science Based Target Initiative method, for which we developed a roadmap to help reach such targets.

We expect to reduce CO2 emissions by 69% (scope 1 and 2) by 2030.

Targets for scope 3 will be established in 2021.

CO2, Climate Change

The fight against climate change is at the core of sustainable development, it’s what encourages us to fulfil the Paris Pledge for Action. In 2019 we set out targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-effect emissions (GEE), according to the Science Based Target Initiative method, for which we developed a roadmap to help reach such targets.

Plastics

We have embraced the environmental challenge set forth by single-use plastics, their widespread use, and the impact they have on the environment. Our action has focused on identifying plastic materials in the product, the packing, and the process. We have established a number of actions to reduce plastic usage by introducing recycled raw materials, or reducing the amounts used. This is in line with the Portuguese Plastics Pact, supported by Sonae.

In terms of reducing the amount of plastic used, this will be accomplished by removing individual plastic bags from the apparel and underwear assortment packs - equivalent to annual savings of 28 tons of plastic (mainly LDPE); removing unnecessary samples packaging - an annual savings of 0.3 tons of plastic (mainly LDPE); reducing the number of material content labels - saving 12 tons of polyester per year.

Recycling

We are studying partnerships to recycle waste and surplus items, develop alternative, more environmentally-friendly products and materials, and supporting several volunteer activities.

Production

We are implementing sustainable measures, such as:
New Packaging and Labelling Manual for suppliers;
Replacing 5 material content labels per product by 1 or 2 labels;
Replacing certain plastic materials;
Launching recycled polyester and recycled cotton (eco-friendly) programmes.

With the plastics initiatives, by 2025:

Guaranteeing that 100 % of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable;

Guaranteeing that 70 % or more of plastic packaging is effectively recycled by increasing collection and recycling processes;

Using an average of 30 % of recycled plastic in new plastic packaging;

Promoting awareness and educational activities for consumers (in the present and future) for the circular use of plastics.

Our Stores

MO is the largest Portuguese retailer with eco-efficient stores. In other words, stores with LED technology that use a central monitoring and control system to develop energy-saving and renewal strategies, and to upgrade all our CO2-emitting devices. We have also developed a training programme aimed at in-store operations for optimised, environmentally-friendly consumption.

We are slowly replacing in-store plastic bags by 2025. At the moment, the plastic bags used are 100% recyclable and are 80% recycled plastic.

Our Eco-Eficientes Offices

Our offices were made more eco-friendly in 2020:

  • We inaugurated the Fashion Floor in an intelligent and eco-efficient building;
  • We eliminated plastic cups (encouraging the use of reusable bottles of water for employees, glasses and glass bottles in meeting rooms, individual coffee cups);
  • We have encouraged recycling by providing recycling bins (we have removed individual waste-paper baskets next to desks);
  • We have encouraged healthier eating habits (with a service that provides healthy meals every day, replacing the usual vending machines).
Our projects:
Our Recycle Masks campaign

The campaign 'Troque a sua mascara por 1€’ (Swap your mask for 1€) invites each member of the MO family to recycle their MOxAd-Tech mask by exchange it for a new one at the price of 1€. The used MOxAd-Tech masks left at our stores are classified and given a second life. With this initiative we are reducing waste and giving textile waste a new life, contributing towards promoting the circular economy.
